Trust did not give patient enough time to consider risks of surgery

The Northern Trust should not have left it to the day of the surgery to explain to a patient the potential complications. The patient said that if she had known the possible consequences she would not have given her consent.

Report recommendations

We asked the Trust to apologise to the patient.

We also asked it to provide training to clinicians on the importance of informing patients, during outpatient appointments, of the risks and benefits of surgery and the options available to them.
