School didn’t properly investigate parent’s complaint

The Board of Governors of a secondary school should have set up a sub-committee to investigate a complaint about whether a pupil’s A Level grades were estimated fairly.

Report recommendations

We asked the school to apologise to the complainant.

We also asked it to deliver training to senior leadership and other relevant staff on its new Complaints Procedure. The training should include the importance of:

• Conducting a fair and robust investigation into complaints

• Fully addressing all issues raised within the complaint response

• Signposting complainants to NIPSO in the letter outlining their final decision on the complaint.
